- Reconcile
-
- Depress the caps lock key; then click each of the transactions the bank
-
- or credit card company shows on its statement. Only the ones that
-
- haven't yet "cleared" should remain unclicked. (It is these that
-
- explain why the balance we show differs from the balance the bank
-
- shows.)
-
-
-
- Click Reconcile when you're ready. If things don't jive:
-
-
-
- 1. Enter any transactions the bank shows that you forgot to record
-
- in Managing Your Money——including this month's service charge or the
-
- interest you paid or received. Just choose Spend or Receive Money from
-
- the MONEY menu and make the entries; when you click the close box, we'll
-
- still be here.
-
-
-
- 2. Correct any mistaken entries you may have made ($32.71 instead
-
- of $37.21). You can't double-click transactions here, but you can
-
- choose Edit Transactions from the MONEY menu, select this account
-
- (unreconciled trnasactions only), make your change——and when you click
-
- the close box, here we'll be, with your selected transactions still
-
- selected.
-
-
-
- 3. Call the bank if IT goofed (charging you $37.21 instead of
-
- $32.71).
-
-
-
- 4. If there's simply no accounting for the discrepancy——every-
-
- thing is perfect——you must have goofed when you first set up the
-
- account (and this is probably the first time you tried to reconcile
-
- it). Double-click the name of this account at upper left and add or
-
- subtract the discrepancy from the Opening Balance. >INow> (and ever
-
- after) you should be in synch. One thing neither the bank's computer
-
- nor your Macintosh does is add wrong.
-
-
-
- When you get "It Balances!," click OK and save your work before quitting
-
- (unless you want to do this again) and click Reselect if you'd now like
-
- to reconcile a second account. Otherwise, click the close box.
